Air conditioners or A/Cs today play an important role in keeping indoor spaces cool. With the advancement of technology A/Cs can now adapt to climatic conditions, control humidity and eliminate dust, soot, foreign bodies and harmful micro-organisms in the air.
Buyers guide – Air conditioners
When to use an A/C?
A/Cs are typically required for cities that experience temperatures above 25° Centigrade (75° Fahrenheit). In many cities the use of an A/Cs are required only in the summer months.
The optimum cooling temperature for an A/C is 23.4° Centigrade, though most A/Cs offer a range from 18°C up to 30 ° C.
What are the minimum requirements to install an A/C?
An A/C is always installed part indoor and part outdoor. The indoor part, depending on the type of A/C, would either require a window or a wall to mount the A/C unit on. In case of a Split A/C a mounting place outdoors is also required for the compressor unit. An A/C uses a 5 AMP socket (also used to connect geysers & refrigerators). A plug point nearest to the A/C indoor unit would reduce the length of the wire.
How much does an A/C cost to operate?
An A/C consumes a lot of electricity when compared to other household devices. A 1 ton A/C, running for 8 hours (all night), would attract an electricity cost of approximately Rs.300 – 400 a month.
How Does an A/C Work?
A/Cs use chemicals that easily convert a gas to a liquid and back again. These chemicals are used to transfer heat from the air inside a home to the outside and in the process making the indoor cool.
Commonly used Terms related to air conditioning
Term used to measure the capacity of an AC.
‘1 Ton’ is the power of an NC that can cool 1000 KGs of air within 24 hours.
Most A/C’s today today are equipped with the technology to recycle and purify air to keep the environment clean and healthy.
Efficiency is measured through a star rating. More stars signify efficiency and savings.
Different Types of Air Conditioners (A/Cs)
Air Conditioners come in 3 primary types for your home
- Window A/C
This is single A/C Unit with Compressor and Condenser. It is mounted on a Window frame. Therefore no necessity to make a hole in the wall. Price is the lowest therefore economical. This type of a/c features auto temperature control and maintains selected temperature in room.
- Split A/C
Evaporator (inside) and Compressor (Outside). Installation requires a hole to be drilled through the wall. Can control moisture and humidity levels. Custom temperature controls including “Sleep Mode”. The sleep mode increases the thermostat temperature by 10 after every hour till it increases temperature by 20.
- Inverter Split A/C
Inverter split A/Cs ensures substantial savings due less consuming of electricity. Are feature loaded, with Sleep Mode, de-humidifiers & Auto Se-start function etc included. Outdoor unit weighs half the amount of a conventional Split A/C.
- Cube A/C
Cube A/C is a split A/C with larger (cube) sized internal unit. Installation requires a hole to be drilled through the roof. Features custom temperature controls, thermostat and other features similar to split A/C.
Air Conditioner (A/C) Capacities
The power of an A/C is measured in ‘Tons
A 1 TON A/C would have the capacity to cool 1000 Kilograms (Kgs) of air within 24 hours. A 1.5 TON A/C could cool 1500 Kilograms (Kgs) of air within 24 hours, and 10 00. Before you buy an A/C you can calculate the required capacity to cool the room by measuring the square foot area.
Features to look for in an Air Conditioner (A/C)
An A/C can do more than just keeping your surrounding cool. There are a number of modes, features and functions included in an A/C that conserve, protect and enhance i. function.
A number of micro filters purify the air before being released from the A/C. The filters block dust, small particles and other unwanted material before being let out from the unit.
Air purifiers help avoid allergies, create a refreshing environment and removes unwanted odors.
Dehumidifier is relevant for surroundings that have high moisture content (high levels of humidity.) Moisture can cause stickiness, perspiration and also allows bacteria to grow. A Dehumidifier removes excess moisture from the air, maintaining a comfortable and safe moisture level inside.
All weather A/Cs work in extreme heat or cold and varying humidity (owls. Ideally suited for locations that feature extreme temperatures such as New Delhi (Al — 45° C). An All-weather A/C can cool or heat the route to maintain a comfortable temperature.
All-weather A/Cs are useful for people living in extreme climates, or those who keep shifting cities with varying temperatures.
A/Cs are built with varying levels of intelligence. A memory chip within can store data such as the preferred temperature and humidity levels. In case of a change in temperature/humidity or interruption of power supply, the A/C will restart to restore the settings.
