What does 100w solar panel mean?

100w solar panel in perfect condition can produce 100w power in 1 hour.

If a 100w solar panel get 6 hours of good sunlight it can produce 600 watt energy. We will be using this assumption for most of the following calculations.

Can a 100w solar panel run a tv?

Old CRT tvs with small screen have 100W power rating. New led, LCD televisions with 32-inch screen only consume around 60w. LCD, LED tv’s with bigger screen consume more power. As an average we are assuming power rating of our tv as 100w.

Lithium-ion battery pack can be discharged only up to 80% (Depth of discharge)

12 volt * 100Ah = 1200 Watt hour. 80% of 1200 is 960 watt hour.

We have 960 watt hours, so 100 watt tv we can use for 960/100 = 9.6

So we can use a TV with power rating of 100w for around 9 hours.

But after losses in DC to battery and then DC to ac, we can expect maximum 7 to 8 hours here.

Can a 100w solar panel charge a 100ah battery?

It is good to charge a Battery with a current around 10% of its Amp rating. If it is low, it will take a very long time to get fully charged. If it is too high it will damage the battery. If we use a 100Ah battery, 10% of 100 is 10. So an input current of around 10 will recharge it in around 10 hours.

100w 12 volt poly crystalline panels can produce around 5 Amps at good sunlight. So it will take a lot of time to charge 100 Amp battery.

So a 50Ah(or 40Ah battery because sunlight is only available for 8 hours maximum) battery will be the best option. But we cannot discharge 50Ah battery fully every day. So instead we use a 100Ah battery and use only 50% of charge every day.

So battery will charge from 50% to 100 percent. It will take around 6 hours of good sunlight to charge 100Ah battery from 50% to 100% with a current of 5 Amperes.

Rough calculations for a really sunny day - perfect conditions.
