Tile work of home in India - A case study.

This is my second post related to the ‘cost of work’ related posts in this blog. As I mentioned in the post about the cost of aluminum roofing, the total cost of the tile work will be half labor cost and half material cost.

Cost of materials & labor is based on current prices in Kerala. Both labor costs and material costs are very high in Kerala when compared to other states in India. But you can get a general idea of the cost.

Cost of tile work of full home - estimate.

As you can imagine, the cost of tile varies in a wide range. Starting from around 30 rupees / square feet to 100 and more.

You can buy good tiles at around 40 rupees / square feet. Which is widely used in most homes in India.

Cost of labor - tile work.

The cost of labor will remain the same regardless of the cost of tile. But as I mentioned earlier it labor costs can be easily calculated based on average tile price. For a normal customer, the average price can be taken as 50 rupees.

Cost of other materials.

Other materials including cement, cotton, filler, grinding materials, brush & sand. The price of sand and cement will take the lion’s share of another material cost.

Types of tiles.

Types of tiles in India - tiles not only come in different qualities but also in different sizes. The main categories used in India include ceramics, vitrified, and porcelain. In these 3 categories, there are different quality options.

Size of tiles.

The most commonly used size of tile used now is 2*2, ie 2 feet by 2 feet. Previously 1 foot by 1 foot was a very common size of tiles used.

2*2 feet tiles are best for rooms with sizes starting from 8 feet * 8 feet to 14 * 14 / 12 by 16.

Other common sizes of tiles include 2 feet by 3 feet, 1 foot by 2 feet 1.5 feet by 1 foot, etc.

Installation cost per square foot.

Installation cost starts from Rs 15 per square foot to Rs 22 square feet.

Types of installations.

Tile can be installed in 3 different ways.

• On top of an existing cement floor

This can be done either by using tile paste or by adding another sand and cement layer on top of an existing cement floor.

Pasting is a good option (especially after chipping of top smooth surface). But the more preferred way by workers is creating another layer of cement and sand on top of the existing floor.

• On top of the concrete base of the foundation.

If tile work is of a new home, it is usually done on top of a concrete foundation.

Extra charges for grinding.

Some workers/contractors will ask for extra charges for grinding works. Usually more than the cost of tile-laying starting from 25 to 35 rupees per square feet. You have to be very clear with workers about this cost. Ask them clearly about all costs involved.

Final thoughts & total cost.

I will give you a rough estimate of tile work costs. For example, we can take 3 different options. A home with 1000 square feet, 1500 and 2000 square feet.
